Child loses leg in landmine blast in northwestern Iran

Mahabad, June 8, IRNA – A child living on rural areas of Sardasht, northwestern Iran lost his leg stepping on a landmine planted by Iraqi regime during 1980-88 war with Iran, Governor of Sardasht said, appealing to UN Humanitarian Office to finance sweeping the mine-infested areas on Iran-Iraq borders to save children.

Speaking to IRNA, Naser Yusefi said the accident happened on Friday in Kani Zard and the individual lost his leg.

He added that the injured person was transferred to hospital and is now under medical care.

During the war imposed by Iraq on Iran, 16 million landmines were planted in over 4,200,000 hectare of lands in the Iranian provinces bordering Iraq by the army of the former Iraqi regime.

Despite the fact that landmine-infested areas have been cleared, landmines and other ordinance explosives remaining from the war are routinely taking tolls on civilians, killing or maiming them.
